Who Makes the Grade?

Think regional economic development is a collaborative challenge? Many would say it pales in comparison to collaboration within the politically charged environment of a university campus.
At the University of Southern Mississippi, economic development is part and parcel of the curriculum and the mission.

But in fact, when it comes to economic development, higher education takes the opportunity to turn an old stereotype on its ear: Those who can, do. Those who can teach ... frequently do better.

Economic development institutes and departments at universities throughout North America and beyond foster research capacity, develop intellectual capital, incubate and assist businesses and forge connections between town, gown and corporate investment. Site Selection in its May issue will be taking a closer look at those schools that have backed study with action, through investment in facilities and parks designed to welcome and work with corporate projects.

But a key highlight of this feature will be a directory of economic development programs offered to degree seekers. If you have one to suggest, please e-mail Adam Bruns, managing editor of Site Selection and editor of the "IAMC Dispatch" and "SiteNet Dispatch," at adam.bruns@conway.com

(For a look at Site Selection coverage of how universities and corporate real estate interact, read "Making the Grade," published online in July 2004, and containing a directory of corporate real estate education programs).
