GE Pumps 500 New Jobs into Upstate New York

A GlobeSt.com article by John Jordan reports that General Electric plans to invest $39 million in existing facilities in Schenectady to house an estimated 500 additional employees. GE has had facilities in the area for decades, and the State of New York chipped in to ice the deal. Jordan writes, "The governor [Spitzer] reports that the state will provide $5 million in grants in connection with the renovation project that should take from 12 months to 18 months to complete. In total, state and local incentives for the project total approximately $7.5 million. The new positions will support GE Power Generation’s various technologies from renewables such as wind and solar to fossil fuels, including natural gas and coal."

3PL to Boost Nashville Operations

The Nashville Business Journal reports that logistics firm Jacobson Companies has identified space in Nashville for a new 277,000 sq. ft. "multi-client campus" facility there. IAMC Associate member ProVenture’s Jeb Atkinson managed the transaction for Jacobson. The article says, "The Des Moines, Iowa, based company has signed an agreement with Panattoni Development Co. to lease a portion of Commerce Farms IV near the Highway 109-Interstate 40 interchange in Lebanon."



Novartis Plans "Biologics Manufacturing Facility" in Singapore

The Singapore Economic Development Board announced November 1 that Pharmaceutical giant Novartis will locate a sophisticated production facility in the country. The Board’s press released says, "Novartis unveiled its plan to build a large-scale biotechnology plant in Singapore to support the rapid growth of its biologics sector, which now accounts for 25 percent of the Novartis product pipeline. Novartis expects to invest approximately USD 700 million — its largest investment to date in manufacturing capacity — in the new, state-of-the-art cell-culture facility."

Pfizer Reverses Ground, Will Expand Cork, Ireland, Facility

Earlier this year, Pfizer had announced plans to close some operations in Ireland according to a report by Finfacts.com, but then identified new business opportunities and decided to invest $175 million in a plant in Shanbelly, creating about 100 jobs. The article goes on to say that "Pfizer is reported to be now planning to make at least an additional $500 million investment at the site so that it can commence large-scale commercial production of specialized products that will focus on oncology and chronic pain treatment. The drugs will be derived from living cells, rather than the chemical compounds traditionally used in pharmaceutical production."

GlaxoSmithKline to Open 130-Job Facility in Montana

A $137 million, 130-job manufacturing facility that GlaxoSmithKline is building near Hamilton, Montana, will produce a drug that boosts patients’ immune response to vaccines, reports an article on Montanasnewsstation.com. In it, Hamilton Mayor Jessica Randazzo praises the project, saying "The work done here saves lives around the world. The research and development of vaccine technology will lead to future medical breakthroughs. And although Hamilton, Montana, may just be a small dot on the Montana road map — the work done here at GSK in Hamilton is putting Hamilton on the map."

Diageo Adds to Scottish Distillery Operations

The international beverage manufacturer Diageo plans to add to its already sizeable production capacity in Scotland. The Scotsman newspaper says, the company "has an estimated 40 percent of the global market for Scotch whisky, and ownership of brands including Johnnie Walker, Bell's and Talisker and Lagavulin single malts. The investment plan in Scotland is being led by finance director Stuart Lorimer, a former KPMG accountant, who believes Diageo's expanding commercial team is more of a corporate think-tank than a number-crunching centre."

Michelin Planning Mexico Tire Manufacturing Facility

According to Tirereview.com, Michelin North America has been on an investment binge to solidify and increase its North American market share. The publication says a new plant in the Guanajuato region of Mexico, "which will produce Michelin brand tires, brings MNA’s recent investments to $1.24 billion." Tirereview.com further reports that "Over the last few months, MNA has announced some $400 million in plant expansion and improvement projects in the U.S. and Canada, and it is buying retread equipment and material supplier Oliver Rubber from Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. for $69 million."

Lockheed Martin Project Brings Jobs to East Tennessee

The high-technology company Lockheed Martin has won a $447 million contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to upgrade its emergency communications and response capabilities, as well as the Corps’ "support services and records management," according to an article by Pratik Joshi in the Tri-City Herald. The project will bring about 30 high-tech jobs to the Tri-Cities area. Joshi writes that "The Corps is responsible for navigation, flood control, environmental protection and disaster response in addition to designing and managing the construction of defense facilities."

Fortune Brands Expanding Distillery Capacity

The bottler of Wild Turkey bourbon, Pernod Ricard, is investing $30 million to expand and upgrade distillery operations near Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, reports the Louisville Courier Journal. The article also says that the consumer goods company Fortune Brands "which owns Maker’s Mark and Jim Beam, is in the midst of a $120 million campaign to upgrade its distilling, aging and bottling operations. The expansion in Lawrenceburg is the lastest in a flurry of similar moves by the state’s biggest bourbon makers."

Waste Management Plans New Baltimore Facility

The waste handling and recycling company Waste Management, Inc., is moving a sizeable office and equipment maintenance facility to Fairfield near Baltimore reports the Baltimore Sun. The article says, "The company invested $8 million in a new 23,650-square-foot complex on 11 acres on Fairfield Road, a section city officials have been targeting for commercial and industrial growth. Most of the peninsula is zoned heavy industrial with deep-water port access, extensive rail service and interstate highway access." Waste Management’s District Manager John Blevins is quoted as saying "This location is central to our existing customer base and positions us to improve our service and grow our business in Baltimore City and the metro area,"
