Corrections Corp. to Expand Facility now under Construction

The nation's largest private sector supplier of prisons and prison services has announced plans to increase the capacity of its planned Adams County (Mississippi) Correctional Center from 1,668 to 2,232 beds. The company is investing $135 million in the facility, which will employ over 300 mostly-local workers. Air Products Plans Larger Plant to Support
U.S. Steel Facility

Air Products and Chemicals has been supplying liquefied oxygen and nitrogen gases to U.S. Steel's Lake Erie plant in Nanticoke, Canada, since 1980. But with the plant's gas demand rising, Air Products decided to upgrade its existing facility to produce a higher volume of liquefied gases at lower cost. An Earth Times article quotes Air Products Vice President Alex Masetti as saying "the new liquefier will increase our supply capacity and improve our market position in the Eastern Canada and Northeastern U.S. markets for liquid products."

Linde Group to Build Liquid Gases Unit in Cebu, Philippines

Recognizing a regional need for lower cost, readily available liquefied industrial gases, Southern Industrial Gases (SIG) Philippines, Inc., has announced plans to construct a facility to produce these in Cebu. SIG is a subsidiary of the Linde Group. SIG's business development officer Ralf Sabornido is quoted in the Sun Star Cebu as saying, "[The new facility] will be able to generate a combined capacity of 65 tons per day. It will produce oxygen for medical and industrial customers, argon for fabrication, and nitrogen for the electronics industry." "This will also be a cost-saving (move) of the company. We can also help customers save by giving them discounts, since the production cost would be lesser. Since the volume produced is big, the production cost will come out cheaper," explains Sabornido.

To strengthen its product line, Swiss drug maker Novartis is buying antibiotic developer Protez Pharmaceuticals. The company has facilities in Malvern, Penn. PZ-601 is a novel broad-spectrum antibiotic in phase II development against potentially fatal drug-resistant infections - including MRSA and ESBL strains. Antibiotic resistance [is] an important public health problem, estimated to account for more than 100,000 deaths annually in the US and Europe together.
