Chart Room

The economic chaos of the last few weeks showed up mostly as stock market gyrations and financial institution collapses. But while not announced with splashy headlines, the manufacturing sector has begun to slow noticeably. The dollar is rising against the currencies of many U.S. trading partners, which eventually will erode U.S. manufacturing exports. Industrial production is falling. Manufacturers’ new orders, including durable goods orders, dropped in August. The 2nd quarter report on corporate profits was revised downward. Producer price inflation eased slightly in September to 8.7 percent, down from a high of 9.8 percent in July. And petroleum prices, like those of most commodities, have been plummeting.
