AstraZeneca Subsidiary Expands Maryland Headquarters

We recently reported to you that AstraZeneca had bought MedImmune, which was then in the process of completing a manufacturing facility in Frederick, Md. Now we have learned that MedImmune plans a major expansion of its Gaithersburg headquarters. Bio Region News says, "MedImmune is designing a seven-story building, including five finished floors and 300,000 square feet, as the next phase of its campus expansion designed to nearly double the space of its headquarters campus…." The article explains, "The division of AstraZeneca expects to break ground on the project in the first half of next year with a late 2011 opening date…. MedImmune said it needed the new space to accommodate hundreds of new employees hired this past year and expected to be hired in 2009."

BASF Purchases Pest Control Business

BASF has a reputation for making shrewd purchases of companies to expand and extend its product lines. As one example, the company’s Web site says, "it has signed an agreement to acquire Sorex Holdings Ltd., a leading manufacturer of branded chemical and non-chemical products for professional pest management. The transaction, which includes U.S.-based Whitmire Micro-Gen and U.K.-based Sorex Ltd., will increase BASF’s presence in the two most important pest control markets worldwide, the United States and Europe."

Bill Pearson and Charlie Waltz are the IAMC Active members with BASF.

BASF is 73rd on Fortune’s Global-500 list and ranks first in the chemicals industry.




Abbott Labs Honored as Top Healthcare Deal Maker

Until the current economic downturn, every week we could read in the business pages about another big merger or acquisition. But we know that only about half of those big deal's succeed. Abbott Laboratories has been honored by The Deal magazine as the most effective dealmaker in the health care industry. The publication says, "Over the past decade, Abbott has reshaped its business portfolio with a focus on high-growth, innovation-driven businesses with market-leading potential. The Deal's readers rated Abbott best on all four of its award criteria: choice of targets and strategy; price paid (or received) compared to value; execution, including integration; and overall quality of the deal team."

Boeing Facility in St. Louis Earns ISO 14001 Certification

An ISO 14001 designation indicates a company has the management processes needed in order to plan, execute and maintain highly effective environmental programs. A Boeing plant in St. Louis was recently honored with this certification. Boeing’s Web sites says, "its St. Louis site has earned International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 certification, a global benchmark of an organization's commitment to understand and continuously improve its environmental performance. Boeing is working to have all of its major manufacturing facilities certified to the ISO 14001 standard by the end of 2008."

The company ranks 20th on Fortune’s 500 list and 1st among aerospace and defense companies.

Boeing Starts Construction on Tianjin, China, Facility Expansion

China has been an aggressive entrant into the aerospace industry. The Boeing Company, which has joint ventured with and partly owned a Chinese company in this industry, recently acquired a majority stake and plans to expand its facilities. Boeing’s Web site says, "an expansion of its China venture broke ground on Wednesday in north China's port city of Tianjin. The 21-million-U.S.-dollar project was launched after the global giant acquired a majority stake in the Tianjin-based BHA Aero Composites Parts Co. Ltd. (BHA) in July. Boeing also gained rights to land adjacent to the venture facilities in the Binhai New Area. Construction was expected to be completed by early 2010 and the new facility would be fully operational by 2013, the U.S. company said. The expansion would increase capacity by about 60 percent by 2013 and employment would rise to about 1,000 from the current 600…."




GlaxoSmithKline Begins Construction of India Facility

In conjunction with Carter Center, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is constructing a manufacturing line to make albendazole, a treatment for the debilitating tropical disease lymphatic filariasis (LF). A Marketwatch report says, "GSK has begun building a manufacturing line that will result in a four-fold increase in the current global capacity to produce albendazole tablets. The new facility, to be built in Nashik, India, will enable GSK to produce more that 600 million tablets a year by 2010." "Lymphatic filariasis, often called elephantiasis, is a parasitic infection spread by mosquitoes that causes grotesque, painful swelling of the limbs," explains the report.

Novartis Awards Motivate Internal Energy Conservation, Business Sustainability

The Swiss drug maker Novartis has placed green strategies at the center of its corporate objectives and public identity. The company has instituted annual awards for projects that significantly advance its energy-use and sustainability goals. On Novartis’ Web site, Head of Corporate Affairs Thomas Wellauer is quoted as saying, "Our plan to reduce energy use and GHG emissions includes ambitious targets in line with the Kyoto Protocol — that is to reduce emissions by at least 5 percent below the 1990 level by 2012. The Energy Excellence Awards are very effective in mobilizing our associates' creativity to contribute to this global effort. This is an integral part in our drive to reduce our carbon footprint as a company - these initiatives help accelerate our efforts and these efforts are showing a genuine impact." The site says, "2008 Novartis Energy Excellence Awards recognize four projects from Austria, Germany, Indonesia and Switzerland."

Whirlpool Leases Calgary Distribution Space

The United States’ largest home appliance maker has announced that it has leased a large distribution facility in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Calgary Herald says, "Whirlpool Canada LP was announced Tuesday [December 2, 2008] as the first industrial tenant at the new Stoney Industrial commercial real estate project in northeast Calgary. Whirlpool is in full operation occupying more than 439,000 square feet of distribution space at the development by WAM Development Group."

Donald Vitek is the IAMC Active member with Whirlpool.

The company ranks 127th on the Fortune 500 list.




Sitel Growing in Nicaragua

Sitel, which provides outsourcing services to other companies, has operations in countries around the globe. In a corporate press release, the company says, "Sitel … today announced the expansion of its operations in Nicaragua, with the opening of its second facility in Managua. Sitel will offer customer service, technical support, sales and back office services to a major provider of prepaid wireless customers in the United States." "The center will be located at the former U.S. Embassy complex, now converted into a technology park, on the Northwest side of Managua," the announcement continues. Sitel's original location in Nicaragua was documented in this May 2008 article from Site Selection.

GE Moves Division Headquarters to Longmont, Colo.

GE Energy is the General Electric division that produces steam, gas, wind and hydroelectric turbines. The division is moving its Control Solutions headquarters from Loveland to Longmont, Colorado. The Northern Colorado Business Report (NCBR) says, "The new facility at 1800 Nelson Road in southwest Longmont will include 152,000 square feet of mixed office and manufacturing space, a materials warehouse and shipping-unloading area, an employee well-being center and a customer service and product demonstration area." "This relocation will allow for future growth of our global business," NCBR quotes Luke Clemente, Control Solutions general manager, as saying. "Even in these challenging economic times, our growth remains strong due to the long-cycle investment nature for global infrastructure projects."
