Siemens Building China Plant to Make Wind Power Equipment

"Green" is in, and wind power is both green and profitable. China, because its growth is outstripping its energy resources, has moved aggressively to install wind power capacity since the oil price spike of a year ago. Telling about a Siemens project to supply wind power generation equipment in China, a China Daily story explains, "On the outskirts of Shanghai, German engineering giant Siemens began construction on a 581-million-yuan wind power equipment plant in late May that marks the company's entry into China's wind energy market. The new 180,000-sq-m facility will at first produce blades for turbines with capacity of 2.3 mW and 3.6 mW, and then manufacture nacelles. At startup, it will make equipment with a combined annual capacity of 500 mW. The plant is expected to come on stream in the second half of 2010, with the first turbine blades and nacelles scheduled to leave the plant during Shanghai's Expo 2010. "

BASF Proposes Battery Chemicals Plant in Elyria, Ohio

Companies are gearing up to produce the battery and other components for electric cars, which could account for a major portion of new auto sales over the coming decade. An article by Rick Jackson posted on WCPN.org’s Web site says, "The German company BASF hopes to build a new facility in Lorain County [Ohio] that would produce a critical material for electric car batteries. BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, already has a chemicals processing plant in Elyria. Its proposed new facility there would produce a patented ‘cathode material’ to be used in advanced lithium-ion batteries that would power a new generation of hybrid cars. The addition to the BASF campus would create only 20 high-tech jobs initially, but there would be much potential for further expansion."

Bill Pearson and Charles Waltz are the IAMC Active members with BASF, which ranks 73rd on Fortune’s Global 500 list and 1st on Fortune’s tally of global chemicals companies.
