Whirlpool Facility Could Open by February

December 28, 2011. The Cleveland Banner reports, "The new Whirlpool complex will include 1.4 million square feet and is expected to employ as many as 1,600 workers, or more. When Whirlpool leaders announced plans for the new factory and FDC on Labor Day 2010, the campus employed about 1,500 workers. The new facility is expected to add another 130 jobs. Groundbreaking was held Veterans Day 2010. The fast-track construction is the largest single investment made by Whirlpool in any one community in its extensive 100-year history. By the time the full plant and warehouse are operational, the total investment is expected to have reached $200 million."

GE Plans Diesel Engine Plant for Western Pennsylvania

December 27, 2011. An article in BusinessWeek says, "General Electric Co.'s transportation unit has announced plans to spend about $72 million to build a diesel engine plant and upgrade an existing plant in western Pennsylvania, bringing up to 150 more jobs to the area by early 2013. GE Transportation said Tuesday that it will spend $35 million on the new Grove City plant and $37 million on the existing plant a few miles away."

Sonoco SC Biomass Operation Creates Local Jobs

December 22, 2011. According to a Biomass Magazine article, "Sonoco, a global packaging products provider that produces 1.2 million tons of uncoated recycled paperboard per year, has ended its three-year quest for sustainable energy production at its facility in Hartsville, S.C. The result is a $75 million biomass boiler retrofit. 'The project will create at least 30 indirect jobs," [Darlington County Economic Development Partnership Executive Director Robert] Long cited. 'Those jobs will primarily come from the trucking needs related to the project. Nearly 30 trucks could be needed,' he said, 'five days a week making four to five runs to support the volume of steam the facility will require.'"

December 21, 2011. "Eastman Chemical Company has recently laid the foundation of a new plant in Heifei, China, to manufacture acetate tow. The new facility will be operated and owned by Eastman Shuangwei Fibers Company (ESFCL), which is a partnership firm with China National Tobacco, and it is estimated to generate 30,000 tons [per year] of acetate tow on the completion of the plant," says a report on Azom.com.

December 21, 2011. A Military.com report says, "Earth is being moved to make way once again for missile production on Redstone Arsenal. And while a recent visit to a site in the southeastern edge of the Arsenal revealed heavy machinery being used to move dirt in preparation for the construction of Raytheon's $75 million, 70,000 square-foot Standard Missile production facility, it's the dirt work that happened prior to the corporation's midsummer ground breaking that will have the most lasting impact on the environment."

Deere Des Moines Expansion Supports 400 Jobs

"Deere & Company today confirmed it plans to expand the manufacturing capacity at the John Deere Des Moines Works following the actions taken by the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and the City of Ankeny to provide incentives to retain jobs in Iowa. In applying for consideration under current programs of the IEDA and the City of Ankeny, Deere committed to the retention of 400 jobs as a direct result of the company's expansion plans and said it plans to invest $85 million in capital improvements, including supplier tooling, to add a new 300,000-square-foot building for product assembly," reports a corporate press release.

Iron Mountain's New India Facility Provides Global IT Services

December 9, 2011. "Iron Mountain Inc., headquartered in Boston, has announced the opening of a facility in Bangalore, India, known as Iron Mountain Services Ltd. The company says that while it has conducted business in the country in the past, it is the company's first dedicated office in the country. The 28,000-square-foot facility will provide worldwide support for Iron Mountain's internal technology infrastructure and business operations, including internal technology applications and databases used to power Iron Mountain's records management and storage, data backup and recovery, document management solutions and secure shredding offerings as well as support for enrolling new customers. Iron Mountain claims its Bangalore facility is the only facility providing IT and IT-enabled services to Iron Mountain in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific office locations," says an SDB Magazine article.

Novartis Begins Construction of Architecturally Unique Facility

A Boston.com article says, "In a part of Cambridge filled with hulking science labs, Swiss medical giant Novartis AG is building a striking glass and granite building designed by noted architect Maya Lin. Lin is among several prominent designers Novartis hired to create a $600 million three-building laboratory and office complex that will be the centerpiece of its worldwide research operations based in Cambridge. Novartis has already begun site work on the property and expects to complete the complex in 2015."

A 3M corporate press release says, "In response to rapidly accelerating demand, 3M has opened a new plant in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, to ramp up its production of 3M™ Glass Bubbles designed for use as a lightweight, ultra-high-strength filler in pipe insulation, drilling fluids, drill riser buoyancy and cementing operations for oil and gas exploration and development. Ribeirão Preto is a city of about 600,000 residents, some 200 miles north of São Paulo, Brazil's largest city. The new 25,000-square-foot facility is situated in a high-tech industrial complex."
