Viewing CREM through a Six-Sigma Lens Most who work for manufacturing companies have experienced Six Sigma, the management tool of choice for increasing the quality of factory goods. Six Sigma is applied to service operations too; consider the tool's application to Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The article "Streamlining Diagnostic Testing at Northwestern Memorial" says, "Project goals were met. Since improvements were implemented in June 2004, the percentage of patients seen within 20 minutes of arrival has increased from an average of 44 to 84 percent, exceeding the project's goal of 80 percent." A few years ago, the professional association of commercial real estate brokers published "Six Sigma and its Application to Commercial Real Estate" by Stephen Lewis. He writes, "A number of SIORs and other real estate experts who have implemented Six Sigma in their businesses swear by it." About 15 months ago, real estate professional Michael Jordan of Jones Lang LaSalle started the blog "Six Sigma for Corporate Real Estate." In a recent posting, Jordan says, "A six-sigma approach to workplace strategy would have started with the high-level objectives (employee productivity? cost savings?) and then established a transfer function, just a simple map of what factors would be necessary for a successful program. A Six Sigma approach would also do a preliminary risk assessment and recognize that a potential failure mode might be managers not knowing how to work with employees that are not tied to the same desk every day."

Participate in IAMC's Online Business Networking Stay "linked in" year-round with fellow IAMC members through IAMC's LinkedIn online business networking group, which is open exclusively to members. Once you join, you can post discussion items for group input and share your knowledge by answering others' questions.
If you're not periodically checking IAMC's discussion group, you're missing some great CREM Q&A. In response to Todd Clark's recent request for ideas, one respondent suggests, "Take all costs into consideration; real estate is only a part of the manufacturing cost (cost/piece). Include your operations group in the process and have them evaluate their most efficient operations. Then weigh the real estate pluses and minuses. You drive the process, but it should be a group decision. This has been my experience."

Small Manufacturers Face Challenges
- Reviewing research by the American Small Manufacturers Coalition, Mark Arend writes in Site Selection magazine's July 2009 edition that "Manufacturing employs 13 million Americans and drives job growth in supporting industries. Manufactured goods represent two-thirds of U.S. exports and drive more net wealth creation than any other sector. Yet even before the recession, the nation's manufacturers were facing intense international competition and a host of other challenges."
