10 High-value Leadership Attributes for the New Year
In the 1980s, as U.S. management theorists were struggling to understand why U.S. companies were losing market share to overseas competitors, the business pages often disparaged the profession of management and glorified the ideal of leadership. Of course, even then most corporate managers worked hard at leadership and most business leaders were also managers. Distinguishing the two roles, management writer Warren Bennis says, "There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important. To manage means to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge of or responsibility for, to conduct. Leading is influencing, guiding in a direction, course, action, opinion. The distinction is crucial." Recognizing that managers and leaders need to be one and the same, BusinessWeek columnist Alaina Love writes, "The following Inspiration Continuum lists 10 characteristic signs of an inspirational leader, the very traits and behaviors that will prove critical in the months ahead as organizations seek to motivate a pared-down and scarred workforce. ... As we enter into the New Year, the most important goal of inspirational leaders is to provide employees with the license to thrive. Great leaders connect others' work to a larger purpose and harness the energy of the organization to achieve results." Love's checklist includes such qualities as authenticity, optimism and inclusiveness.
