IAMC State of the Association 2020

Outgoing Remarks from Colleen Caravati, Chair 2019-2020, Delivered at IAMC's Annual Business Meeting

I would like to start by wishing you and your families the very best—for your health and safety.

When the IAMC board met at the beginning of the year – in Atlanta last January – we had no idea that it would be the only time this year that we would meet face to face.  We did a lot of work strategic planning for the year and the years ahead. And we left knowing that we would see each other again later that spring in Biloxi.

Then, as we all experienced, the reality of 2020 hit, and we were faced with difficult and unprecedented decisions that needed to be made quickly.

While this is not how I imagined my year as chair would go, I am incredibly proud of the IAMC leadership – from board to committee chairs to staff – and the work we have done.

We started 2020 planning three Forums: one in the spring in Biloxi, one in June in London, and one in the fall in Boise. We had 7 Local events planned across the United States, 2 slated for the United Kingdom and 4 scheduled in Latin America. And, we had 4 webinars on the calendar.

The Dallas Local was held before the pandemic was a pandemic. Since then we have canceled most of the Local and International events, though two were held virtually. This includes the Atlanta Local which featured an impressive program, followed by a full day of board meetings via Teams, and capped off with a lively happy hour.

We canceled the Spring Forum in Biloxi and turned the Fall Forum in Boise into our first virtual conference. That said, we are excited to have both Biloxi and Boise back on the calendar for 2023!

We moved the London Forum to a virtual event in October, and we have held 14 webinars with more to come.

Through it all, the work of the association has continued. At the annual business meeting we ratified a member vote on important changes to the By-Laws, and today we welcome three new members to the board of directors.

Additionally, this year more than 50 new corporate members have joined our ranks, and we are enjoying the highest corporate retention rate we’ve seen in my tenure and maybe longer. And finally, our sponsors – the lifeblood of this organization – have been steadfast in their support.

This is a testament to IAMC, its members, leaders, staff and sponsors.

There is no doubt that 2020 will go down as one of the most disruptive years in IAMC history. However, it will also go down as a turning point in our growth as an organization.

Thank you for believing in IAMC. Belonging to and participating in IAMC is a choice, and one that we are grateful that you make every day.

Stay safe, and I look forward to seeing you all soon!
