Ford’s EV Plant Sets Memphis for the Future

URBAN LAND INSTITUTE—Brandon Herrington says he’s been spending more time in Haywood County, TN than he ever imagined. But it will be worth it in the long run. The director of marketing and business development for Montgomery Martin Contractors has been elbows deep in Ford Motor’s evolving electric vehicle manufacturing campus there, dubbed Blue Oval. (The latest edition to the nearly six square miles of development is the Tennessee College of Applied Technologies.) When the work is done, the local area is looking at what he terms a “seismic” shift in the regional economy. This includes the potential addition of $3.5 billion to the state’s gross product and the generation of more than 27,000 new jobs. Plus, he cites the current blight of “crime, poverty, diversity disparities and outmigration” plaguing the Memphis region, and expresses optimism “that intentional regional growth is the key to stronger communities and will eventually become the rising tide that lifts all boats.”

DP Schenker Inks Deal for Net-Zero Ocean Shipments

SUPPLY CHAIN DIVE—DB Schenker has struck a deal with transportation and shipping firm MSC to move at least 30,000 TEUs of cargo via ships with net-zero emissions. The agreement calls for shippers to pay for biofuel as an option, whether it’s for less-than-full or full container loads as well as for refrigerated shipments. Schenker’s strategy extends beyond ocean freight and also has options for the use of sustainable fuel for air cargo as well.

$25B Logistics Hub Breaks Ground

GLOBEST.COM—It’s being called one of the world’s largest logistics hubs and, not surprisingly, it has the development price tag to match--$25 billion. The World Logistics Center in the Moreno Valley district of California’s Inland Empire is expected to break ground later this year, and when the construction dust clears, it will pace out to nearly 41 million square feet in as many as 27 buildings. The project, on 2600 acres, is so large that it takes up nearly 10% of Moreno Valley’s acreage and will necessitate skybridges to connect the individual buildings. Not at all surprisingly, the project was delayed as far back as 2015 by local environmental groups. But those lawsuits fell away when developer Highland Fairview agreed to invest $47 million to cut the site’s environmental impact. This includes a $12-million outlay for electric vehicles and charging stations.

GreenPoint Launches Outdoor Storage JV

GLOBEST.COM—GreenPoint Partners, in a joint venture with Semi-Stow, a truck/trailer operator, has taken on an ambitious industrial outdoor storage (IOS) strategy. The JV has already made two investments toward its planned $500-million portfolio--IOS facilities in Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth. Clearly, it’s a growing real estate sector, an asset class currently valued at $200 billion. “Truck parking and trailer storage are a key component of the logistics and e-commerce value chain and a sector where innovation has historically been limited,” said Chris Green, GreenPoint CEO, in a statement.
