Daimler, Cummins, Paccar Shake on $3B Battery Strategy

TRUCKING DIVE—Daimler Truck has entered into a $3-billion joint venture with Cummins and Paccar for a factory to produce lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. Each of the partners will hold a 30% stake in the plant, while EVE Energy out of China will serve as technology partner and reap the remaining 10%. “This planned joint venture enables economies of scale beyond Daimler Truck,” said that firm’s CEO, Martin Daum. “It is a key puzzle piece of our battery industrialization strategy, ensuring access to the right battery cell technology at the right cost.” No location was announced.

Maersk Differentiates Omnichannel From Omni-Commerce

MAERSK NEWSROOM—Omni-channel approaches have become a keystone in retail customer outreach, incorporating everything from mobile apps to AI and the Internet of Things. As complex and, says Maersk, logistically nightmarish as omnichannel strategies can be, they are not as comprehensive as an all-inclusive omni-commerce strategy. “While omnichannel is more about the idea of a unified brand presence in recognition of catering to the consumers preference for different channels, omni-commerce refers to a more comprehensive business approach to provide a seamless and unified shopping experience for consumers from end-to-end. This includes the integration of various systems, processes and data across multiple channels as well as the optimization of technology to create a consistent and personalized consumer experience.”

Do Land Planners Plan on Industrial’s Value?

URBAN LAND INSTITUTE—Smart growth typically mandates walkable communities, diverse housing and environmental protection. “But what,” asks the Urban Land Institute, “about jobs?” While much well-located industrial space has been converted to housing, “under the name of smart growth and sustainability,” it is imperative to remember that industrial facilities of all types  offer “many positive externalities and ‘back of house’ functions that are under-appreciated, and . . . provide diverse jobs, many services and property taxes. Flexible and responsive spaces are needed for adaptable and resilient cities.”
