TRUCKING DIVE—President Joseph Biden has created a cabinet-level council focused on supply chain issues. Cochaired by the national security and economic advisors, the Council on Supply Chain Resilience is one of a reported 30 actions the administration is committing to supply chain strength. Those other actions include a new office for multimodal policy under the auspices of the Department of Transportation and enabling the stateside manufacture of essential medicines through the Department of Health and Human Services.

URBAN LAND INSTITUTE—Developers and construction, concrete and steel suppliers gathered recently for ULI’s Embedded Carbon Convening, where the need for partnerships among all stakeholders to reduce embedded carbon arose as the clear mandate. As the Institute reports, buildings account for some 39% of global carbon emissions annually. The meeting also set straight common myths about the reduction of embedded carbon. These include: * Low carbon design is the architect’s responsibility, * Lower carbon concrete and steel materials cost more and always extend construction timelines and * Stakeholders across the industry don’t know how to design, spec or install low-carbon steel and concrete. SUPPLY CHAIN DIVE—DHL Supply Chain has four new automated warehouses on deck. That will bring the total to 13, with current US locations in Memphis, Fort Worth, Indianapolis and Atlanta in addition to foreign countries. The warehouses employ automated storage and retrieval systems from AutoStore and are a continuation of DHL’s plan to digitize global warehousing operations. Scheduling for the new facilities was not reported.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MANUFACTURERS—The Environmental Protection Agency is eyeing a cutback in ethylene oxide, used in the manufacture of everything from textiles to antifreeze. NAM is pushing back on the cutback—to levels “so low that it amounts to a ban on the compound.” Claiming that there is no substitute for the chemical, serious repercussions await. “If this rule is finalized, a large number of medical devices could no longer be sterilized, and a lot of items that are relied on for modern life, such as textiles, plastics, household cleaners and adhesives, could not be produced in their current form,” said NAM VP of Domestic Policy Brandon Farris. “If the EPA moves forward with this proposal, there will be no alternatives for the critical uses of this compound.”

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY EXECUTIVE—Hines is now the owner of the Chicago Prime Portfolio, a 1.1-million-square-foot pair of buildings in the Chicago suburb of Melrose. AEW Capital Management was the reported seller of the two buildings, which are fully leased to three logistics firms. The pair features 32- and 35-foot clear heights, one dock per 5,000 square feet and dual rail loading.
