UPS Increases Efficiencies Through Automated Tech

SUPPLY CHAIN DIVE—As the holiday season ramps up, UPS is reportedly hiring more than 100,000 seasonal workers to meet the coming demand. With an eye toward an “improved employee experience and increased efficiency” (in the words of CEO Carol Tomé), the increased use of tech will make itself known in the package sortation process and tasks deemed repetitive and physically demanding for employees. These include the movement of irregularly sized packages and unloading trailers.

Lineage Logistics Scores 1.2 M-SF Cold Storage Pack

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY EXECUTIVE—Eight cold storage warehouses, some 1.3 million square feet of assets, are now in the hands of Lineage Logistics. Two of the assets, owned formerly by Burris Logistics, are located in Florida, and one each in Georgia, Oklahoma, Delaware, Wisconsin and Maryland. Beefing up Lineage’s Midwest and Eastern network, all of the facilities are located on major highways. The firm’s global portfolio now tallies 400 facilities and more than 2.5 billion cubic feet of capacity.

BGO Industrial REIT Scores 9.4M SF in Midwest

GLOBEST.COM—BGO Industrial REIT has taken a share in a massive industrial portfolio for $130 million. That outlay yielded a 34.2% ownership stake in a portfolio valued at $948 million. The trust now owns 29 separate industrial buildings—more than 9.4 million square feet—in Cincinnati, Kansas City, St. Louis and Kenosha, WI. The pack is 90% leased by distributors, logistics firms ands manufacturers. The seller was not disclosed.

ViaWest Moves Dirt on Major Phoenix Campus

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY EXECUTIVE—Construction has begun on what is being called one of the Phoenix area’s largest commerce parks. The Base, by ViaWest Group, will be a 144-acre complex. Phase 1 alone will consist of seven buildings ranging from 85,000 to 309,000 square feet and totaling 1.2 million feet and is expected to deliver in Q4 of next year. Cushman & Wakefield arranged the equity piece while Bank OZK provided a $96.5-million construction loan for the first phase. DLR is the architect; Kimley-Horn the civil engineer.

ATRI To Explore Obstacles to—and Strategies for--Women in Trucking

TRUCKING DIVE—The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is launching research into obstacles women face in becoming truck drivers. The female population of over-road drivers is only 2.7% and only 8.1% of all US truckers, according to data from the American Trucking Association. National surveys and focus groups will be key to the research, with the mission “to identify both issues and motivators for women who are considering careers in trucking.”
