Program Overview
Tour of Hazelwood Green
Description: Tour of the RIDC Mill 19, a catalytic redevelopment of the former Pittsburgh Jones & Laughlin Steel Company mill into a green, sustainable advanced manufacturing research center, and the first phase of revitalization in Hazelwood Green. The mill’s steel superstructure supports the largest rooftop solar array in the U.S., with enough electricity to power 380 homes. The complex has numerous other sustainability features including landscaping that incorporates a rainwater recycling system and reclaimed parts of the former mill. Mill 19 is home to advanced manufacturing partners including Carnegie Mellon University’s Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) and Manufacturing Futures Institute, Catalyst Connection, Motional, and YYK AP Technologies Lab.
Speaker: Don Smith, PhD, President, RIDC

Tour Westinghouse eVinci Facility in Etna
Description: Crafted from over 60 years of commercial nuclear design and engineering, Westinghouse is currently developing the eVinci™ microreactor, a next-generation, micro-modular reactor. With a competitive cost, robust power source and marginal maintenance, the eVinci microreactor offers transportability and on-site distribution. The eVinci microreactor can produce 5 MWe with a 15 MWth core design and will deliver power and heat where needed. The eVinci microreactor facility in Etna will be used to accelerate our product development and manufacture heat pipes which are the key part of our design.
