Keynote Address

Managing the Unpredictable

Eliza - 300

Speaker:
Baroness Manningham-Buller LG, DCB
Former Head of MI5 & Former Chair of the Wellcome Trust

Eliza Manningham-Buller headed Britain’s Security Service (MI5) from 2002 to 2007, before serving as Chair of the Wellcome Trust, one of the world’s largest charitable funders of medical research and other activity to improve human health. From counter terrorism to pandemics, Eliza has led organisations through remarkable and pressurised times.

In her keynote presentation, Eliza reflects on 20 years as a leader of two very different organisations, but which share many traits and goals in managing the unpredictable and trying to keep millions safe. She outlines how leaders’ priorities must change in order to keep pace with shifting demands from all stakeholders and the constant emergence of new, often unimagined challenges. From existential threats such as climate change and pandemics to diversity and fairness, leaders have to seriously consider an everchanging, complex landscape of priorities that influence both their organisation’s success and society’s future.

Developing Your Invisible Advantage

Kevin Gaskell - 300

Speaker:
Kevin Gaskell
Former Head of UK operations for Porsche and BMW

Kevin Gaskell has led and turned around businesses large and small and in sectors from automotive to technology, financial to garden centres. He’s headed both Porsche’s and BMW’s UK operations, founded and led online startups, and taken his never-give-up attitude to extreme climates.

As well as his extensive business operations, Kevin is a keen adventurer, regularly jumping from planes, climbing mountains and trekking hostile climes (he’s raised the money to build a cancer treatment centre at the same time). He often refers to these trials of physical and mental endurance when addressing business challenges.

Kevin asks organisations to consider not what they think is possible, but what they really want to achieve. Only by moving past the (often self-imposed) limits can groups achieve real success. His infectious enthusiasm combines with real-world, practical business experience. When others say something can’t be done, he asks why. He believes that any goal can be achieved by the people who already know the business given a clarity of vision and purpose, and the freedom to realise their brilliance.
